Six of our group members representing the Universities of Eastern Finland and Turku embarked on a journey towards the vibrant city of Osaka, Japan. From June 16th and 20th, we had the opportunity to attend workshops, hear about the latest advancements in the field, and showcase our own research findings.

Our contributions to the scientific program included four posters and an oral presentation. On the first and second day of the scientific presentations, postdoctoral researchers Ambrin Farizah Babu and Ville Koistinen had their posters on display. Ambrin, receiver of the early-career travel award from Nordic Metabolomics Society, presented her work on the metabolic changes in MASLD mouse model while Ville’s findings were about the longitudinal changes in salivary biomarkers. Also, on the second day, PhD researcher Hany Ahmed delivered his oral presentation discussing the associations between fecal and plasma metabolites in the Nutritional Metabolomics session chaired by our group leader, Professor Kati Hanhineva. On the third and fourth day, postdoc Iman Zarei and PhD researcher Sara Ferreira Rocha had their posters on show. Iman presented his work on fatty amides and circulating lipids in children and adults while Sara shared her findings on how whole grain impact the pig brain and gut metabolomes.

As the conference photos show, our findings attracted interest and generated engaging discussions. These interactions and exchanges with the community are among the key motivators for participating in the Metabolomics Society’s annual meetings. In addition to the rich scientific content, the conference offered social events like roundtable discussions and a conference dinner, where the atmosphere was more relaxed – perfect for reconnecting with old colleagues and meeting new ones.

In closing, the location of the Metabolomics 2025 was also announced. Next year’s annual meeting will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from June 22–26, aligning with Finland’s midsummer celebrations.
